Good design shouldn't equate to a large
project. Smaller house addition/remodels, if planned well, can still
accommodate a lot into tight areas. An example is this Kitchen for a
couple in southwest Omaha. A very small addition onto this house added
tremendous opportunity and space to open up a galley Kitchen which now
includes a two-level working island with a walnut bar top.
Working closely with this homeowner (an interior designer), we
collaborated to create cabinets with furniture detailing and painted
them white. This gave light, interest and an openness to this kitchen.
Good space planning and thoughtful cabinet design, maximizing storage
and drawer space, made for ease of cooking with comfortable, handy
access to utensils, spices and pots and pans. Granite countertops add
serviceability and an upscale atmosphere to an elegant kitchen. To
complete the open feeling, a wall between the eating area and the living
room was removed and a new fireplace surround with maple mantel was
created, along with a tiled hearth to update the existing brick
fireplace which was then painted.
