Silo

This new home was designed for clients who were looking to downsize and simplify their home while taking advantage of beautiful views of their private pond.  The home is located on an acreage in the hills of western Iowa.

The concept was to group three simple gable roof structures connected with two flat roof “Connector Spaces”.  The front approach to the home is punctuated with a tall corrugated, galvanized steel stair silo that connects all three levels.  The grouping of structures creates a courtyard that can be experienced from a variety of spaces in the home, including the Entry Foyer and “Bridge” to the Master Suite.

Like the forms, the exterior materials are simple; a combination of vertical and horizontal cedar, natural stone, and galvanized steel.

The interior is designed to be simple and open, with “punched” window and door openings framing views in all directions.  Most cabinetry is prefinished and the flooring is luxury vinyl plank throughout with old world brick pavers used in the Foyer and Bridge. The silo stair features a wood utility pole that helps support the winding stair.  The details throughout the interior and exterior are minimal, clean and intentionally thought out to enhance the overall design concept.
